UK Visa Application Status – How to Track It Step by Step Online

You have submitted your UK visa application, paid the fees, and given your biometrics – and now you wait. This is the part nobody tells you how to handle. Knowing how to check your UK visa application status track online properly gives you real information rather than anxiety. This guide covers both the UKVI portal and VFS Global tracking methods, explains what every status message actually means, and tells you what to do if your application has stalled.

UK Visa Application Status

Quick Facts – Application Status

Standard processing target: 15 working days from biometrics appointment

Priority Service: decision in 5 working days (additional £500)

Super Priority: decision in 1 working day (additional £1,000)

Track via: gov.uk/track-visa-application (UKVI) or VFS Global India portal

✔ Decision Made does not reveal the outcome – only your returned passport does

✔ UKVI handles queries by webchat only – they do not take phone calls

Standard Processing Times from India

Before checking your status obsessively, set realistic expectations. The UK Home Office targets a decision within 15 working days from your biometrics appointment date for Standard Visitor Visa applications from India. During peak travel seasons – May to August and around Diwali – this can extend to 20 to 25 working days. If you applied with Priority Service, the target is 5 working days. Super Priority targets 1 working day.

Working days means Monday to Friday excluding UK public holidays. A 15 working day window from a Monday biometrics appointment means your earliest decision is typically three calendar weeks later, not 15 calendar days.

Method 1: UKVI Online Tracking Portal

  1. Visit: gov.uk/track-visa-application
  2. Enter your Application Reference Number (ARN) from your application confirmation email
  3. Enter your date of birth as submitted in the application
  4. Click “Track Application” to see your current status

The UKVI portal updates in real time when status changes occur. Not every stage triggers an email notification, so checking the portal directly is more reliable than waiting for emails.

Method 2: VFS Global Tracking for Indian Applicants

  1. Visit: vfsglobal.com – select India and United Kingdom
  2. Click Track Your Application in the navigation
  3. Enter your VFS Reference Number from your appointment confirmation
  4. Enter your date of birth and submit

VFS Global tracking shows whether your physical passport has been dispatched and where it currently is in the return process. This is especially useful in the final stages when your passport is being returned by courier.

What Do the Status Messages Actually Mean?

Application Received

Your application is logged in the system. No action needed from you. The officer has not yet started reviewing your file.

Under Review / With Decision Maker

Your application is actively being assessed by an entry clearance officer. This is the standard processing phase and can last several days to weeks depending on workload and complexity.

Further Information Required

The officer needs additional documentation from you. Check your email immediately and respond through the specific method requested. Delays in responding directly extend your processing time.

Decision Made

A decision has been reached. This does not tell you whether it is an approval or refusal. Your passport will be returned physically, and the outcome – either a visa label in your passport or a refusal letter – will only be visible when you open the envelope.

Dispatched / Ready for Collection

Your passport has been sent back. Expect it within 2 to 4 working days depending on your city. Track the courier using the tracking number VFS provides via email.

What to Do If Your Status Has Not Updated After 3 Weeks

  • Use UKVI’s official webchat on GOV.UK – this is the only contact method for status queries, they do not handle visa calls by phone
  • Contact VFS Global India through their official helpline for updates on your physical passport location
  • If you applied with Priority or Super Priority and the promised timeline has passed, you may be entitled to a fee refund – contact UKVI webchat
  • If your travel is within 7 days and no decision has been made, visit your VFS Global centre in person for urgent assistance

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I track my UK visa application from India?

Visit gov.uk/track-visa-application and enter your application reference number and date of birth. Also use the VFS Global India portal at vfsglobal.com if you applied through a VFS center.

What does “Decision Made” mean on the UKVI tracker?

It means an entry clearance officer has reached a decision. The actual outcome approval or refusal is only revealed when your passport is physically returned to you with a visa label or refusal letter inside.

How long does UK visa processing take from India?

The standard target is 15 working days. Many decisions come in 10–12 working days during quieter periods. Priority service is delivered in 5 working days, and Super Priority in 1 working day for an additional fee.

What if my UK visa status shows no change after 3 weeks?

Contact UKVI via their official web chat on GOV.UK—they do not handle status queries by telephone. If travel is imminent, visit your VFS Global center for urgent assistance.

Will I get an email when my UK visa decision is made?

You may receive a notification, but the UKVI tracker is more reliable than waiting for emails. Check the portal directly at gov.uk/track-visa-application rather than relying on email alerts.
